In La Plata, Buenos Aires Province, the driver accused of hitting and killing 18-year-old university student Eugenia Carril turned himself in on Sunday morning at the local DDI headquarters. This occurred after the Buenos Aires Police identified and seized the Chevrolet Meriva he used to flee the scene. Police sources informed the Argentine News Agency that the suspect is a Peruvian national who was arrested for homicide, and his vehicle was found at the intersection of streets 5 and 57. Around 11:00 AM on Sunday, investigators confirmed that the sought-after van has a visible stain on the hood and its license plate was identified as GXY 920. This is a blue Chevrolet Meriva with two people inside at the time of Carril's death. According to images incorporated into the case file, the vehicle was captured by cameras days before the incident at various points in the region. One recording shows it on February 9 at 8:30 AM at the intersection of Avenida 122 and Avenida 32, while another camera detected it on the same day at 8:18 AM at 122 and 51. With this material, investigators are trying to reconstruct the vehicle's route and establish the places it frequented. The case is in the hands of prosecutor Fernando Padovan, head of the Functional Instruction Unit (UFI) No. 12 of the La Plata Judicial Department. For now, the event is classified as negligent homicide, although it is not ruled out that aggravating circumstances could be added due to the fact that the author fled the scene after the impact. In parallel, the victim's family continues to demand speed in the investigation and justice for the young woman who died on the night of Friday, February 13. The operation involved officers from the La Plata 8th Police Station and the La Plata DDI.
Crime Details Carril had been intensely sought by her family since Friday night after returning from the university. An investigator explained that 'in the image provided by the La Plata Municipal Monitoring Center, the young woman can be seen getting off the bus, walking a few blocks, and an imprudent maneuver ended in the impact followed by the death of the victim.' The discovery was made in the area of 3 and 96, where neighbors alerted 911 after observing a person lying in a ditch. Officers from the local station, the Patrol Command, and experts from the Scientific Police attended the scene to perform the first tasks to preserve the scene and collect evidence. According to the information gathered, the young woman got off an Este line bus, branch 14, at the intersection of 7 and 96, and was heading to her home located at 1 and 96, when all contact with her relatives was lost. The young woman's family went to the discovery scene and closely followed the operation after having launched an intense search and requested dissemination on social networks due to her disappearance. Likewise, images provided by the La Plata Municipal Monitoring Center and private circuits allowed establishing the sequence prior to the impact, so the vehicle model was identified as a Chevrolet Meriva. 'In the image, you can see the young woman when she got off the bus, walked a few blocks, and finally, the imprudent maneuver that ended in the impact followed by the death of the victim,' an investigator told NA. The area's recordings focus on a camera installed on 96 between 2 and 3 and facing street 3, which allowed observing the moment before the collision. According to the film record, around 10:26 PM, the young woman is seen walking on street 96 in the direction from 4 to 3. A minute later, at approximately 10:27 PM, a van appears in the same sequence, driving on 96 from 7 towards 1. Upon arriving at the intersection with street 3, the vehicle's brake lights can be seen and a sudden swerving maneuver, a moment in which investigators presume the collision with the victim occurred. In the same recording, the passage of another Chevrolet Meriva driving in the opposite direction was also detected, a material that is now being analyzed to determine if that vehicle is related to the event or if its driver could provide data as a witness.
